We were invited to join a weekend outreach to Subotica, Serbia with a missions training team from Vajta, Hungary. It was organized by our amazing, talented friend Lisa Collins (she’s like a whirlwind of love and good works in action. We don’t think she ever sleeps, or needs to.)
For years we have heard the stories of Serbia (formerly Yugoslavia) - of the first Calvary Chapel in Europe, of a group of crazy kids who came to Christ through a crazy pastor named Mike Harris at “the Monkey Place”. We have rejoiced at the many who were saved and the work God has done far beyond Subotica in Europe, laughed with missionary friends about the stories, and wept for the heartaches that have come as well.
So it was just like our God to go above and beyond and allow us to visit three ministries:
CC Subotica, where we initially stopped, met up with dear friends, ate some burek, and saw the beautiful facility that Pastor Chuck came over to dedicate twenty years ago.
CC Cantavir, which triples as a church, missions house, and outreach center to the surrounding gypsy community, where we marveled at the work God is doing through Pastor Tibor and his family of 9. We served by cleaning out a large supply room, doing construction, and visiting neighboring villages to share the Gospel - but we simply joined in the work their family and friends take part in daily, and…
CC Backa Topola, where we rejoiced in the way the Lord is using Taiwo and Zuza to share the Gospel with their community. They are truly humble servants of the Lord.
We have visited many missionaries (and hope to visit many more) and if there is a common denominator it would be this: they desperately need prayer.
If you have time this week, would you take a day to pray for each of the three churches above? Maybe send the pastor an email of encouragement?
When you go on a missions trip, you hope to see changed lives, but we always discover that the life that is changed is our own.
